Bring STEM fun to students through virtual workshop

Having fun while learning! Around 140 students from 18 local primary and secondary schools explored the fun of STEM learning at the Smart Car Programming Workshop cum Remote Driving Experience held on October 31 despite staying at home.

The annual workshop, which was organized by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) with support of ExxonMobil Hong Kong, moved online via Zoom this year. Although the participating students could not physically touch the Micro: bit smart cars or conduct test runs by themselves, with guidance and help of HKUST students, they were able to apply the programming skills learned from the workshop to make the smart cars move according to their instructions and performed various tasks assigned, such as, making the cars run along pre-set tracks and changing the LED light color of their cars. During the process, they formed groups to develop their programs to control the driving speed and direction remotely with their own computers, while the HKUST students on the university campus helped them to conduct test runs and guide them to identify ways to improve performance. Even interactions can only be done online, the workshop remained engaging, inspiring and fun for the participants just like the previous years. A big thank you to the HKUST team for their efforts and support.
